Emerald City Aikido

Aikido was founded upon the idea that true victory in life involves winning over the discord with oneself. Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969), known to Aikido practitioners as O Sensei or "great teacher," developed the art in this century. Translated from Japanese, Aikido means "the way of harmonizing with nature's energy." It is also known as the art of peace. Aikido teaches harmony and balance in relation to the environment, others, and oneself. Underlying the physical practice of the art are universal principles. These principles embrace the ideas of non-violence and peace.

The Practice of Aikido

The goal of Aikido is to unify mind, body and spirit to effectively neutralize an attack. This protects both the attacker and the defender. Aikido teaches that physical force alone cannot prevail, as force often creates resistance. Using circular and flowing movements, students practice redirecting attacks. Learning to fall and lose one's balance with integrity is also part of training. Aikido interactions emphasize receptivity and compassion.

Practitioners learn a new approach to conflict that unites with the energy of opposition. In this union, practitioners learn that violence is self defeating.

Emerald City Aikido Seattle

Dynamic, physically challenging, and fun, Aikido training enhances balance, flexibility, and a calm, clear mind. Students attain good conditioning and develop the intuition and skills necessary for self defense. Qualities gained through practice carry into interactions of daily life. Aikido thus offers students a life time path of spiritual growth.

"The way of the warrior is to manifest Divine Love, a spirit that embraces and nurtures all things."
- Morihei Ueshiba
