Welcome!

Getting Started with Aikido

Starting anything new requires a certain amount of effort and risk taking. Aikido is no different and it is hoped you will discover it is fun and well worth the effort. One can get started in Aikido by simply coming to a class to observe, especially if you are not familiar with what Aikido training looks like. All new students, children and adults, are also invited to take a free trial class.

Children are easily integrated into the curriculum while learning about Aikido through non competitive games and activities. New students learn by imitating the teacher and other students. Play and having fun are the work of children and the guideline for our program. After their complimentary class, new students are welcome to return to classes at their level. Children can jump in and begin training at any time.

As an adult taking a complimentary class will give you a small taste of what it is like to be in an Aikido class. To really get going training in Aikido, we offer introductory specials for new adult students. The introductory specials allow you to get your feet wet, learning Aikido philosophy and beginning the practice of basic movements, falls and techniques. We recognize that not everyone has the same amount of time to commit to a new activity. Our Introductory Specials are organized to offer new students opportunities to fit Aikido training into their schedules.

New adult students can sign up at any time for monthly specials attending class once a week, twice a week or as often as you like. In addition Emerald City Aikido periodically offers 6 week Beginner series which run through the Monday and Wednesday evening classes. You can also take a special more than once and sign up with a friend for an additional discount. We also offer discounts for high school, college, graduate level students and parents of enrolled children.

What to Wear

If you are trying out a class, come in loose fitting exercise clothes, like sweats and t-shirt. Do not wear shorts. We train bare foot on soft mats. For all new students children and adults, we offer a discount on the gi, or uniform, upon signing up. The good news is that you do not need a lot of equipment to start Aikido.
